Imperfect Dreams

"Hey!  You must be the new guys!"
"Yup we sure are," Sandy answered, turning round to see who was talking,  "I'm Sandy and this is my best friend and tag team partner, Laiyla.
"It's great to meet such a pair of lovely ladies in this place at last.  I'm B..."
"Ben Hughman, we know, the world famous wrestling champion," Laiyla broke in with a slight sense of jealousy in her voice.
"Shut up Laiyla!" Whispered Sandy.  She looked up at Ben.  The number of times she had wished of this moment and it had finally come true.
"Just because I don't fancy him!" Laiyla replied in a sharp but satisfied voice.  Ben blushed slightly as Sandy gave Laiyla a discrete but hard dig in the side.
"I love your boots Ben, I don't suppose I could try them on could I?"
"Sure you can.  They'll be way to big for you though, I'm a size 13 - unlucky for some."
"Not for you though hey Sandy!" Laiyla exclaimed, a huge grin spreading across her face.  Sandy lowered her head to hide the blushes.
"Well I'm finished here today.  Do you want me to drop you off at home?" Ben asked politely, smiling at Sandy.
"Ok sure" Sandy replied, pinching her arm behind her back to make sure that she wouldn't wake up from the heaven that she was finding herself in.  She and Laiyla had shrugged off all the laughs and insulting comments that people had thrown at them when they found out that they wanted to be professional WWF wrestlers, but they kept believing in themselves and finally made their dream a reality.

"Thanks so much," Sandy said on arrival at their apartment, "do you want to come in for a drink or something?  Maybe you could give us some tips on who to watch out for."
"Yeah sure, thanks," replied Ben.  He looked up smiling at Sandy as she paused from opening the car door to stare back into his eyes.
"Come on then," snarled Laiyla from that back seat as she reached over to open her own door.  They all entered the apartment with Sandy leading, trying to kick all of the dirty washing out of sight.
"We haven't really had much time to decorate yet," Sandy said, looking slightly embarrassed at the wallpaper that was barely even touching the walls.  "Sit down and I'll make you some coffee."
"Thanks, I need something to wake me up a bit, I've been working through the night."
"Sugar?"
"No thanks"
"Do you want one Laiyla?"
"No.  I'm going out," she said grabbing her bag and heading for the door.
"So you guys are really best friends?" Matt asked Sandy.
"Yeah, since high school.  You think she's a bit of a bitch don't you?"
"What makes you think that?"
"It's just the way you look at her."
"Well kind of.  That's not always a bad thing though.  I suppose you need to have a bit of a nasty streak in this business, it makes the acting so much easier.  Its just some people don't know when to stop."
"Really?  Like who?" Sandy asked.
"Kaitlyn Kassidy and Sara Gleam for a start.  Sara's just got engaged to Kane."
" Is he that scary in real life?"
"Yeah.  He's one guy you really don't want to mess with.  So anyway, are you working tomorrow?
"Yeah," Sandy replied excitedly.
"Who are you up against?"
"I don't actually know, hold on a minute, I'll have a look."  Sandy reached down into her bag and pulled out a piece of paper.  Her face dropped.
"What's the matter?" Ben asked with a worried expression on his face."
"My first ever match and guess who I get to share it with.  No other than Sara Gleam."
The next morning Sandy awoke to find herself snuggled up in Ben's arms.
"What are..?" Sandy said groggily, stretching her arms into the air.
"You fell asleep and I didn't want to wake you, I hope you don't mind"
"No, not at all"
Sandy took advantage of the close moment and kissed Ben hard on the lips.  At that moment Laiyla appeared in the doorway.
"So do you guys want some breakfast or are you planning on eating eachother?"  Laiyla laughed, looking at Sandy's blushing face.
After breakfast Ben drove Sandy to work.  She was on her own today; the tag team match wasn't until the following week.  How she wished that she was with Laiyla for her first match.
"I'm just going to get changed.  I'll meet you in the canteen in about five minutes.  Ok?"  Sandy asked Ben.
"Sure.  Bye then sweetness," replied Ben.
Sandy emerged from the changing room in a fitted, purple, sleeveless top and baggy denim pants that shimmered in the light.  Her hair was tied back into a tight, high pony that was split and gelled into 3 sharp horizontal spikes.  She wore dramatic purple eye shadow that hung like flames around her eyes.
"Wow!" exclaimed Ben as she entered the canteen, "you look great!"
"Thanks" Sandy replied as she received a big hug from Ben.
"Sandy, Sara, your on in five minutes," boomed a voice coming from the speaker next to her.  At that moment Sara pushed her way past Sandy, digging her so hard in the stomach that she nearly doubled over.
"Are you ok?" asked Ben, bending down slightly to look at her face that was crumpled with pain.  He lifted her head and gave her a soft, long kiss.
"I'd better go," whispered Sandy as she headed off towards the ring.
"Sandy" shouted Ben, stopping Sandy in her tracks.  She turned to face him but remained silent, waiting for him to speak.  There was a pause.
"Sandy.  I...I think I finally believe in love at first sight."
"What?"
"I think I'm in love with you."
"Is this for real?  You hardly know me?"
"I know, its weird, I have a feeling for you that I have never felt before in my life."
There was another pause and Sandy started to cry.
"Have I said something to upset you?"
"No. Not at all.  I've never been happier.  My life feels like a dream.  I have all I ever wished for and getting it seems to have been so easy.  I love you to Ben Hughman, with all my heart."
Through the cheers of delight from the people in the canteen as they hugged and kissed, Sandy heard her music playing for the first time.
"Oh my god, I've got to go," cried Sandy as she set off at a run towards the ring for the second time.
"Good luck!" Ben shouted after her, but she had gone.
Sandy stood in the ring facing Sara, feeling intimidated by the hundreds of people in the audience cheering for her opponent, and Kane, staring up at her from the sidelines watching and perhaps waiting.
"What took you so long Sandy?  You weren't scared where you?"  Sara whispered with a laugh in her voice. The match began.  Throughout the match Sara whispered threatening and spiteful comments to Sandy, winding her up more and more as they went on.   Sara pinned Sandy.
"1," boomed the echoing voice of the commentator.
"There's no room for scrawny little no hopper's like you in this world, why don't you go back to your sad excuse for a boyfriend, Ben Huge-ass" Sara whispered to Sandy, gripping her wrists so hard that her hands started to turn a pale blue.
"2,"
"Your calling me an no hopper when the best you can get is that!"  Screamed Sandy, pointing her finger hard at Kane.  Everyone heard.  Sandy released herself from Sara's grip just before the third count.  A catfight broke out, no acting necessary.  Sandy punched Sara in the face.  One hard blow that sent blood spurting everywhere.  Sara lay on the floor clutching her face with both hands, whilst Kane jumped into the ring to finish the fight.  He was out of control. Nobody dared get close enough to stop him; they just stood and watched with guilty, terrified expressions.  Sandy was like a helpless ragdoll compared to Kane, nothing could prepare her for his raging aggression.  He threw her, punched her and kicked her.  She seemed almost lifeless when Ben came into view.  He ran full speed towards the ring, shouting Sandy's name as he went.
"Why are you all just standing there? Do something!" Ben pleaded as he approached the ring.  He managed to detangle Kane from sandy and past her to the commentator on the sidelines.
"So you want a piece of me too do you?"  Snarled Kane with an almost evil grin.  If anybody wondered whether Ben's declaration of love was true, all doubts would have now fled from their minds.
"Ben.  Ben can you hear me?" whispered Laiyla in a soothing voice that stirred Ben.
"Where...where am I?" You're in hospital.
"Sandy. Sandy where's Sandy? Is she alright?"
"She's fine, thanks to you.  She just went to get a drink from the machine."
"What's happened to Kane and Sara?"
"Kane's been locked up."
"And Sara?"
"Well, no.  Apparently they can't charge her with anything.  Anyway I'll have to tell the nurse your awake or I'll get into trouble," said Laiyla, drawing back the curtain.
A few seconds later the nurse entered with an uncomfortable expression on her face.
"Hi Ben, its nice to see you finally awake."  Started the nurse, "It was a very heroic thing you did you know you should be very proud of yourself.  Everybody's talking about it."
"I just want to get back home, back wrestling."
"Well that's what I've come to talk to you about.  I'm afraid that due to some of the injuries to your legs that you suffered during the assault, you would almost certainly have to lose them if any other injury occurred in that specific place.  Wrestling again would be far too risky." Explained the nurse, watching Ben's face drain of colour, making him look even worse that before.
"No. No you can't mean that. Wrestling is my life!"  Cried Ben
"I'm sorry.  I'll leave you alone for a while so you can come to terms a bit."  The nurse left the cubical as Ben started to cry.
"Ben. It's sandy. Is it ok for me to talk to you?" asked Sandy, talking through a gap in the curtains.
"Yeah come in."
"Hi.  How are you?  Has the nurse..."
"Yeah she's told me.  I just want to get home now, you know, try and get my head round it all."
"Are you allowed to discharge yourself yet?" asked Sandy, placing herself down on the end of the bed.
"Only if I've got somebody to look after me 24 hors a day for a month while the broken legs heal, so, no."
"What do you mean no?  I'll look after you.  It's the least I can do, plus it's a great excuse for spending more time with you."
Sandy smiled, looking at Ben.
"Don't be stupid.  You cant.   You have to be with me 24 hors a day.  There is no way you can wrestle.  You can't take a month off now, you've just started.  You can't risk loosing your dream."
"You are much more important to me than any other dream, you are my dream now, my dream come true."
"What about Laiyla?"
"What about her?"
"You're her tag team partner.  She needs you."
"She'll find somebody else."
"I don't want you to end up hating me."
"Look at me.  I promise you with all of my heart that I will never hate you.  I never could.  I'd better go and tell Laiyla what's happening."  Sandy turned to leave.
"Sandy."
"What?"
"Thanks."
"You saved my life.  Believe me you have nothing to thank me for."  Assured Sandy, the echo of her voice drifting away down the corridor to greet Laiyla.
Sandy and Ben sat in front of the television two nights later, wondering who Laiyla had found as her new tag team partner.  She hadn't spoken to her since the day in the hospital when she told her she was giving up on her dream.  They sat watching with bated breath as the Laiyla's music came on.  She approached the ring, followed by the one and only Sara Gleam.
"No!  How could she!" Shouted Sandy, leaping from her seat.
"Don't let her get to you. She's obviously not worth it."
"She's meant to be my best friend.  I can't believe she's done this.  How can I face anybody again, they'll all be laughing at me.  How could she humiliate me so much?"  Sandy broke down crying as Ben held her in his arms kissing her forehead and wiping the tears from her cheeks.
"I don't know what I'd do without you Ben.  You are all I need for life, all I want in the world."
"Then why don't we move away?" suggested Ben, "Anywhere you like.  We can start a new dream.  Together."
"I'd like nothing more than that.  As long as its what you want aswell."
"I just want us to be together and you to be happy."
"Oh I love you so much Ben.  I can't believe how lucky I am to have you."
"I love you to Sandy.  How do you feel about starting our new life, our new dream as husband and wife?"
"Yes!" Sandy exclaimed as she began to cry again.
By this time Ben had fully recovered although there would be still no hope in a wrestling career for him, his legs would always be too weak.  They packed a few items of clothing to start them off in their new life and magazines and food to keep them occupied on their journey to their chosen destination, California.  They set out early to catch the first train that day.  They arrived at the train station at 6.30am where they prepared to leave their old lives behind, along with everything and everyone in them.
"You sure you want to do this," Ben asked Sandy for the final time as they waited in the queue to buy their tickets.
"Definitely. You?"
"You bet." Ben answed, stepping forward to pay for the two tickets.
"I can't wait to be Mrs. Ben Hughman.  I love you so much.  More than words could express."
"I love you too Sandy.  That's why I want to spend the rest of my life with you.  I don't think I could live without you."  When Ben finished speaking he kissed her, holding her tight in his arms so she felt more protected and loved than ever before.  They boarded the train and found an empty cabin where they sat and imagined what their new lives would be like, with huge smiles upon their faces.   The train conductor walked along to the end of train, slamming all of the doors as he went.  The first loud bang stirred sandy from her daydream.  She looked out of the window.  She opened her mouth in confusement and intrigue.  Ben saw this.
"Sandy what's up?" asked Ben, leaning even closer to her.
"Its...its Laiyla," sandy replied shakily, still staring out of the window.  Before Ben had chance to comment, Sandy jumped up from her seat and ran to the door of their carriage.
"Sandy!  Where are you going?"
"I'll be right back."  She got off the train just before the door was shut.  Ben ran over to it, trying to follow Sandy.
"I'm sorry sir, the train will be departing soon," the conductor replied to Ben's pleas and attempts to get off the train to join Laiyla.
"I need to get off!  Please!"  This time the conductor didn't bother to reply, just continued on to the next and last carriage to shut the doors.  Ben tried to run ahead to the next open door but he was too late.  He stood looking out through the murky glass of the door at the smirking face of the conductor before he changed his vision to Sandy.  She was talking to Laiyla in a very civil way.  Laiyla seemed to be apologising to her, and Sandy accepting.
"I'm so sorry.  I've been so stupid." Started Laiyla.
"Its ok. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes." Sandy assured
"Yeah but..."  Laiyla was interrupted by a harsh laugh coming from Sara who had just appeared near to them.  Ben saw this and was panicking even more.
"So, you decided to go back to that did you?" Sara asked Laiyla, jerking her head towards Sandy.  "You'd rather have that than me as your best friend?"
"Yes.  You where never my best friend, just my tag tem partner, that's all."
"Why are you lying?  If you're stupid enough to not want me as a best friend then you don't deserve to have anyone." Screeched Sara, her eyes narrowing as she reached in her pocket and pulled out a gun.  She pointed it straight at Laiyla.  The train started to move. Ben was slowly getting further and further away.
"Bye bye bitch!" Sara cackled as she pulled the trigger before she turned and left.  Sandy, without saying a word, dived in front of Laiyla, taking full force of the bullet in her back.  The train was now out of sight.  Ben heard a deafening scream that forever rang in his ears.
"NO! Sandy. No. Sandy please no.  Laiyla broke down crying, holding Sandy, lifeless in her arms. Ben started to cry, his fists still pounding on the carriage door, still shouting Sandy's name.
Ben caught the first train back home.  The train station heaved with police. In the center of it all, Still crouched down on the ground, crying, was Laiyla.  Ben, after persuading the police, approached her.  He crouched down with her.
"I'm so sorry Ben," whispered Laiyla through her tears as Ben started to cry.
"Is she... is she d..." asked Ben
"Yes"
Sandy's funeral came and passed.  There wasn't much fuss.  She wouldn't have wanted that.  Be moved in with Laiyla while they both got over Sandy's death.  Two months on they where still living together and starting to bond a stronger relationship.
"Thanks for helping me through it all Ben." Said Laiyla, looking dreamily up ant him.  Ben smiled and remained silent.
"I suppose there's one good thing that's come out Sandy's death.  Now I have you all to myself."  She lent over to kiss Ben.  Ben pulled back and quickly stood up.
"Wow. What are you doing?  Your not sorry Sandy's dead at all you creep."
Ben grabbed his car keys from off the coffee table and left the room.
"Ben, where are you going?"
"Like I'm going to tell you.  Just stay away from me, ok."
Ben climbed into his car and drove off.  Laiyla followed in hers.
He drove all of the way up the mountain overlooking the sea, Laiyla still following.  When he finally stopped the car they both got out.
"I thought I told you to stay away." Said Ben in a suprisingly calming voice, as he walked further and further to the edge of the mountain.
"Ben, don't do anything stupid." Pleaded Laiyla, hanging back close to the cars.  She slowly took small steps forward to get closer to Ben.
"I'm not planing on doing anything stupid.  I just want to be with Sandy again."
"Ben you're not going to jump are you."
"Don't you get it? Sandy was my life.  Now that she's gone I have nothing.  I cant live without her.  My only wish is to be with her."
"Ben no. You can't just end your life like this.  You'll get over her.  I'll help you."
"I don't ever want anything to do with you Laiyla, I want to be together with Sandy again. That's my dream now." Ben took another step towards the edge.  At this point he was only balancing there.  One slight movement and he would be gone.  Forever.
"I love you sandy" Ben shouted as he dived off the mountain.
Laiyla sat down and started to cry.  As her first, single teardrop hit the face of the mountain, she heard a deafening splash
"Goodbye Ben" she whispered.
